KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS "All things to all men" |
The FATHER MAGUIRE COUNCIL
was chartered on May 10, 1954 to serve the parishes of Saint
Christopher in West Covina, CA and Sacred Heart in Covina, CA.
Click here to learn more about our namesake, Father William A. Maguire.
Our council is located on the border of our two cities, Covina and West Covina, approximately 18-20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles along Interstate 10. The population of Covina is around 40,000 while West Covina boasts a population of over 100,000. We are also a member of the West Covina Chamber of Commerce.
We are part of the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, located within District 79 of the California State Council. Our council is the seventh largest council in California (over 550 statewide) with a total membership of 365-plus members. Our council's Fourth Degree members belong to the Christopher Columbus Assembly.
We proudly occupy one of the largest council facilities in California which includes a large hall that can seat 300 people, a council meeting room, additional office and storage space, a lounge/bar that can seat 80-100, and a large backyard where we hold family picnics. The picnic area features a playground area for our children, volleyball court, bocci court, horseshoe pits, large built-in gas BBQ and plenty of shade for our California summer events. Stop by for our annual picnics on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Our council is affiliated with the Ladies of Columbus, Our Lady of the Snows Council. The LOC is an entirely separate organization (as opposed to an auxiliary) complete with their own Supreme Council and their own local officers. Ladies must be related to a Brother Knight in order to join. That relationship can be wife, mother, sister, or daughter of a member (or deceased member).
Our LOC council provides a tremendous and invaluable service to our Council. They are there helping at all of our functions. The Ladies also conduct a few of their own programs raising funds for: the Holy Family Adoption center in Los Angeles, and the Comboni Missions.
For more information concerning this group, forming your own local council, etc. please contact Mrs. Linda Jaramillo.

The Columbian Squires is the official youth group
for the Knights of Columbus. Catholic boys aged 10-18 are
eligible to join this organization. Each Squires Circle must
be sponsored by a council, assembly or chapter. The Father
Maguire Council sponsors the Bishop Daily Circle for the students
of the parish and public schools in our area. Contact Brother James Munoz if
you have any questions.
The monthly council newsletter is known as THE DEGREE. Due to a change in personnel, we are no longer able to offer the current editions online. HOWEVER, you can also read COLUMBIA MAGAZINE online. This is the Order-wide publication of the Knights of Columbus. Click the banner below to be connected to the Supreme site, but be sure to come back to our site when you're finished......

A new Fourth Degree Assembly exists in our area thanks to the efforts of a few members of our council during the 1996-97 Columbian Year. The CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS ASSEMBLY #2482 was chartered on February 12, 1997 with Brother Ralph A. Castro Sr. from our council as the Charter Faithful Navigator and Brother R. Eugene Hays Sr. as Faithful Comptroller. Other Brothers that helped form the Assembly include Brother Gilbert Gonzales and our former Field Agent, Brother Jim Baker Sr.
Read more about the Fourth Degree in the Who Can Become A Knight section.
Our council has two areas available for rentals for functions such as wedding receptions, birthday parties, and company parties. The MAIN HALL can seat up to 300 people and the BAR/LOUNGE can seat 80-100.
We now offer our own catering under the direction of Chef Jorge Bruce with a variety of pricing options.
Please call us at (626) 960-6740 for more information.

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practical Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who shall not be less than 18 years of age on their last birthday. A practical Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church. Application blanks are available from any member of the Knights of Columbus. Every knight is happy to propose eligible Catholic men for consideration as members.
Acceptance of the applicant depends upon a vote of the members of the subordinate council in which he is making application.
All priests and religious brothers having duly made application for membership and participated in the ceremonials become honorary life members of the Order and are exempt from payment of dues.
Application for membership must be made through the council in the community nearest the applicant's place of residence. Interested prospects without a permanent domicile, such as men temporarily away from home through duty in the armed forces, may make application through their hometown council or at the nearest council on a military base.
If favorably voted upon, the applicant becomes a member by initiation known as the First Degree. He subsequently is advanced through the Second Degree and the Third Degree.
There are modest initiation fees and dues set by subordinate councils under regulations established by the Supreme Council. The insurance privileges are available to all members who can qualify, which represents an important advantage of membership. For men in every walk of life the name Knights of Columbus engenders the image of a united organization, efficiently going about it tasks of charity, unity, fraternity, patriotism and defense of the priesthood. It is composed of men who are giving unselfishly of their time and talents in service of God and their country.
Membership in the Knights of Columbus provides opportunity for wholesome association with congenial companions who are, first of all, practical Catholic gentlemen. It offers the opportunity for fellowship with those who are of the same belief, who recognize the same duty to God, to family and to neighbor and who stand side by side in defense of those beliefs. Programs are so organized as to appeal to the individual interest of the members. Through many constructive activities of Christian fraternity, members are enabled to render service to their Church, their country and their fellowman. Through membership they develop a consciousness of their ability to lead and to assist.
Organized Columbianism, united behind the individual Knight of Columbus, provides the power of an intelligent, alert body of Catholic men--a strength which the individual by himself cannot achieve.
The Knights of Columbus has a proud heritage. The qualified Catholic man can share in that heritage and build an even greater future by affiliating himself with this forceful, effective body.
This information, along with other laws and rules of the Order, is contained in a booklet called These Men They Call Knights which is given to each man when he joins.
To join our Council, contact one of the officers listed above.
Another degree open to members of the Knights of Columbus is that of the Fourth (or Patriotic) Degree. On February 22, 1900, the first exemplification of that degree was held in New York City. The ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the Order: charity, unity and fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing, one year after the anniversary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree.
The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of partiotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups called assemblies. Fourth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.
Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity which has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus organization.
